The text import dialog will pop up in which you choose вЂњseparated by tabвЂќ and leave the field for text delimiter empty.Д¬hanging the contents of existing StarDict dictionaries.

Open Calc and click file -> open -> choose file type вЂњText CSVвЂќ and open the tabfile.

Again you can also use your spreadsheet program for doing this. If you keep the tabfile of your dictionary you can continue to extend it and create new dictionary versions from it whenever you like. I have already explained this here and here.

Put the files in a folder, where your dictionary software can see them.Now open the file yourDictionary.ifoВ and replace bookname=yourDictionaryВ with bookname=В followed by the actual name that you want to give your dictionary.If you did everything right, three files are created at the location of your tabfile:, yourDictionary.idxВ and yourDictionary.ifo.

Open a terminal and enter: sudo apt-get install stardict-tools If you use UbuntuВ you can install it straight from the repositories. What we need for that is a converter, which is provided by the stardict-tools package. Converting to StarDict format Installing the converter Now that we have created our dictionary source file it is time to bring it to StarDicts dictionary format, that can also be used with Goldendict. Click OK and ignore the warning, that only the active sheet was saved.A small window pops up, in which you choose character set: вЂњUTF-8вЂі, field delimiter: В and no text delimiter.Now choose file > save as > and choose вЂњText CSVвЂќ as file format.The second entry will be A2, B2В and so on. The first definition is put completely in B1. Create a new spreadsheet and place your first keyword in cell A1.The >and $В are used as indicators for tabs and line breaks respectively.Д¬reating tabfiles with a spreadsheet programДЇor those who can resist the beauty of plain text, there is also a way to create a tabfile by using a spreadsheet program, like CalcВ or Gnumeric. See the picture above for an example of such a tabfile. As the data in this file is separated by tabs, the file is called a tabfile. That means you better not use tabs to make your definition look nicely. So a tab stop is used as a separator between keyword and definition. And what follows till the end of the line is the definition. Also combinations of words or whole phrases are allowed. And if you really want to have line breaks in your definition, use В instead.Д®ach line begins with the key word. It might be handy to rather activate visual line breaks in your editor, if your definition gets longer than the width of your screen. Hence you are not allowed to use line breaks in your definition. Each entry in this file is separated by a line break, which means, that each line is taken as a single entry. This can be done with any text editor like Gedit, Notepad, Emacs, etc. To create a dictionary, first write your entries to a simple text file. I found that especially useful when reading Buddhist texts, where an exhaustive dictionary of special terminology is still in need and the student has to rely mostly on information that he arduously gathers. The next time you search this word, not only the entries of lets say Monier-Williams and Boethlingk will pop up, but also your individual notes, that youВ took on this word. Then convert this text file to a dictionary format, and add it to your dictionary program. While reading a Sanskrit text for example you may collect all the words that have a special meaning in context, or that otherwise deserve to be commented upon, and write them together with your comments in a text file. Why do you want to do that? One of the reasons is that this might be a smart way to use your philological notes more effectively. Both tools are released under a free license, and provide an interface for searching several dictionaries at the same time.Д«eside the dictionaries already available, there is also a fairly easy way to create your own dictionaries. Such programs are for example StarDictВ and Goldendict. These dictionaries can be searched by using special dictionary programs.

As I have mentioned in earlier posts, some offline searchable dictionaries are available on the internet, which are directly relevant to indological or buddhological studies.
